| • The McKechnie Institute | 2009 McKechnie Exhibition Programme McKechnie Institute, Girvan The Edminston Gift and Bequest Paintings from the Collections 7th February - 28th March Richard Edmiston was a native of Glasgow and senior partner in the firm of Messrs J. and R. Edmiston, auctioneers and valuators, in the city. In November 1915, he offered 16 paintings to Girvan Town Council for display in the McMaster Hall, which was accepted by the council. The works in his gift were typical of the art styles produced in the last fifty years of the 19th century. These were all by Scottish artists and included Alfred East 1849-1913, James MacMaster 1856-1913, Alexander Kellock Brown 1849-1922, James Kay 1858-1942 and Henry James Boddington 1811-1865. Of the initial gift of 16 paintings, 5 were lost in the fire, which destroyed the McMaster Hall in Girvan in 1939. A further gift of paintings from the estate of Edmiston’s father was made in 1917. His father had been one of the first regular visitors to Girvan, and had established a house in the town where his family spent many summer holidays. In January 1949, at the ceremony to bestow the Freedom of Girvan, Richard Edmiston presented two more art works to the town. These were a pastel portrait by an unknown artist, and a painting, The Geisha, by George Henry 1858-1943. This exhibition is a selection of the paintings from the Edmiston Gift and Bequest. William Muir 1828 - 1910 The Davidson Gift 26th September - 21st Novemeber This exhibition features a selection of oil paintings by William McGregor McDonald Muir who lived at 3 Dalrymple Street in Girvan during the second half of the 19th century. William was a Master Baker to trade and his creative body of work contains mainly local topographical studies of the Girvan area. His subject matter was mostly of Girvan harbour, its fishing boats and shoreline, particularly Girvan townscape set against the backdrop of the Carrick Hills. In later life, William Muir and his wife left Girvan in 1903 to join his eldest son in Wynard, Tasmania, where they lived until his death in 1910. In 1915, the benefactor, Thomas Davidson, made a gift of 25 paintings by William Muir to Girvan Town Council. These were hung in the McMaster Hall until the fire of 1939, after which they were shown around the town in the Davidson Hospital and other council owned properties. The works are now part of South Ayrshire Fine Art Collection. Christmas at the McKechnie 28th November - 23rd December On show, a display of festive artwork created by young people from the Carrick area. |
