Welcome
the new Girvan-Online
Since 1999 this is the third site that has been created. As with the previous sites this site is not just for the locals, but it is the local site for the 'greater' Girvan area.
Where there are new websites, we will link to them rather than re-produce their content here. That way the best and most up-to-date information will always be available. If we have missed your website and you want a link please let us know.

The site is currently managed by Ailsa Horizons who are keen to develop the site's potential.
With a big focus on being a community site, Girvan Online is keen for people of all ages to become involved and there are many opportunities to do so - whether you'd like to submit news stories, tell us about events, add your Girvan pics to the gallery or chat on our friendly forum - we welcome you all.

What do you think about the site?
I moved away from girvan in 1970 and would love to see pics of Girvan ,new and old ,my family were fishermen and it would be nice to see pics of the harbour and what is left of the fishing fleet
Where has the list of all the local clubs (and their secretaries ) gone??? I can't find it
Wishing awebody a Happy New Year an awe the best fur 2013.
how about a help section, explaining how to do the simple
things like adding photos, links to mintetresting sites etc.,
Why has a map been plonked in the middle of the page, obscuring the writing underneath? The front page is a real mess.No wonder no one bothers with GOL these days.
I seem to have lost the facility of posting (or I am having yet another 'senior moment')
Can someone please advise me on how to post -- I want to share my chestnut soup recipe with you
Had a wee look and lots of good info there. Home page - that nice map of Girvan overlays part of the page and hides other stuff.
The Forum appears to deid!
A new website to promote Carrick is being developed here:http://www.carrickayrshire.com/.It looks promising!GOL's front page looks messy and overcrowded to me, I'm afraid.
New blood on GOL !
Welcome Tog.
The new look site is great, and very informative. I have added it to my favourites list

Iggy Piggy Pudding Pie, GOL is S-to-the-H-to-the-I-to-the-T-to-the-E and you wonder why!! #uFail
You have destroyed the old GOL, replaced it with this s**t which, according to your little horde of mongs, is an "improvement"! Chrome vs. IE9?? IE is the biggest load of manure despite Microshoft's marketing adverts

Hung this last week in one of the newest South Ayrshire restaurants. It`s a 57 x 37inches oil on canvas.
It can be seen at the Shimla Cuisine, Kildonan country house, Barrhill.
Loverly grub, and nice folks.
Here`s the link again, incase it didnae work the first time.
Cheers,
Dbo.

Tarquin - Sorry for getting entangled in the mixup. & whover asked why I haven't done "a much better website": I am a single person trying against a whol "web team" that have been employed to do "the job". You could go back to the roots of the old design where everything had been more or less perfected. James - It still still looks bad, that they have "improved" the website by suggesting that we go onto some person's facebook account to view photos of GOL. There were group presentations from 1999 to 2003 which I attended was enthused about helping out with with my photos.
It look like they have responed if you would look at other areas of the site. The site has google maps and there is now an events sidebar whick looks like its being updated. There are also a number of new links for organisations. Perhaps some of your comments could go in the Forum rather than the front page?
Dreamer, you are looking very perturbed!
Marc, told you - he's still around!
As for deleting your comments - I can't do that (being just a GOL visitor), but if I could, I would have deleted the lot for using the "f" word. However, apology accepted. I'm surprised that the "powers that be" never deleted it, which confirms the suspicions voiced here that they are not reading or responding to these comments.
I am now starting to understand (not knowing anything about website design) what you point of view is and I agree that if this new site depends on just one person in one location to update things, then it is not as good as the old one where various people updated their delegated subjects.
As for being a wimp that drinks alcohol knowing that it kills brain cells, well, that's me OK! And I've sunk quite a few pints in the Ailsa Hotel, which was never called the Ailsa Craig Hotel (as stated in the Ailsa Craig Project website) , as far as I can remember. That's probably not long, due to reduction in brain cell activity!

A good website to base GOL on: http://ailsacraigproject.org/?page=girvan
tqrquin - your obviously a bit of a wimp, deleting my comments and telling me that you no so and so and you are WAITING on him getting back from whatever. GOL is a website, it can be updated from anywhere. The reason why they used to use PHP (my suggestion) was to allow people to update certain parts of the website from anywhere with any computer therefor not relying (waiting) on *1* person getting back to work. Do you drink alcohol knowing that it is killing braincells? lol
Paul - I just stated the facts about what we had before the "new and improved" (lol) GOL which disbanded from the old templates and the webdesign that GOL got for a few thousand pounds from Economic Development.
...and why don't you use it?
sorry for swaering! don't pretend that you guys have "improved" anything. You (meaning who claim to be "in charge" of girvan-online) have done the template of the website
I helped to update GOL for 4 years before Ailsa Horizons took over the site.If they had posted on the Forum - just once - to say hello and thanks to the Forum members for keeping it alive, I would have volunteered to help again. But they didn't, and neither did Mr.Green, which makes me think they are not the kind of organisation I'd want to be a part of.The heading here is 'What do you think about the site' - some opinions will be negative, and the fact that no one is replying to the concerns expressed here isn't helping. It's never wise to ask questions you might not like the answers to!
Phew, yon boy Marc certainly has them telt. But for the life of me, I wish I knew what he was on about! Maybe someone will translate.
“Dreamer would not see my petty remark”. Which one of my petty remarks was that I wonder? I’ll have you know that me and Dreamer are kin? We are closely related through drink and he is (was?) my GOL punfriend.. Also, I’m sure that he has not really gone and is keeping a watching brief out there somewhere and will return eventually. As will one or two others no doubt.
I also agree with Paul.
It is so easy to sit on the fence and do nothing and ridicule someone else effort , Instead of doing this why dont you get off it and offer to help
street maps can be got from scottish publisher at largs. If you want to make your own get a map that's out of copyright and trace it... corel draw can be used to start an interactive base map - like "the villages" used tae have - now that was a braw Map with wildlife and all - what with Biosphere status for the area now.
GREAT TOWN
GIRVAN IS GREAT :)
This one's not bad.
looking for full street map of girvan ?
HAH HAH HAH !!!!
Dreamer - oota yer mind, oota the geme, oot furra bevvy, oota punland, oot wi the dug??
The silence in response to comments posted here is deafening.I don't see the point of inviting comments if they're just going to be ignored.
startin` tae not trust this site,...so....ahm oot !
I think your site's really good. I'm not a local but visit as a 'tourist' every couple of years. Am coming up next week and am looking forward to seeing Ailsa again. It's not easy to find self-catering accomodation in the area so any links to that would be good.
Maybe local advertising on this website would do more for this site and the town. I would pay a small amount of money to have my business on this site and i am sure many more would. It would be great to every shop was on this site especially if they have a web page link and with a town map showing where they were. This could grow to any other businesses/ factorys advertising. It could help develope this site quicker with alittle investment! A local Girvan web designer can do a web page extremely cheap.
Hi
You can create a gallery by using Flash. The college has licences for it and also girvan-online has a licence.
hi yes the site is great.just waiting on the webcam now..
Hi Jeannie,Nice of you to say what is wrong with the site may be you could contact G.O.L.and let them know where they are going wrong and help them with this problem you have found.I like a few others here have no web design skills or anything to do with this site.Ithought it looked okay.
Tony - not criticising, but the title above says "what do you think about this site", so your dog poo comments really belong on the forum. Why not put them under "Carrick Chatter".
Jeannie - now you really did say what you think about the site! However, you don't go into any detail about what you see as being wrong and where and what to do about it. I have no connection with the site, nor do I know anything about website design, but it looks OK to me.
girvan should get an award for the dirtiest pavement with dog poo..we dodged so much recently,we wonder why people dont clean up there dogs mess.imagine being blind,or have a sight problem, there shoes would be coverd--and it causes disease--
Please Stop!!! Get some professional Advice or Training in Design PLEASE!! You dont even know what you are doing wrong - arent even aware of Readability Standards and Font choice or Style Sheets for a start; dont seem to have a clue about Typography and Colour ARGH!
when will we able to fine or warn people about not cleaning up dogs mess in our town..every other pavement has there share of it..people dont seem to realize it can cause disease,in northern irelan its an 80 pound fine--hope south ayrshire follow suit..
Yes I definitely vote for a webcam placed somewhere in Girvan, don't know where though...the main street perhaps or the junction next to The Roxy
It would be great to see the webcam back, it was very popular before.I don't understand why there seems to be such a problem finding decent photos for the Home page - the Ailsa Craig one is so dark the beach looks like an oil slick, and the less said about the Stumpy one the better.Girvan is a beautiful place, and the photos on the Home page of GOL should be reflecting that!
Not sure what you have in mind Carey? What kind of thing would you like on the WebSite? Where do you stay now and are you from Girvan originally?
as an x pat could a site become available
I will certainly argue in favour of that. What do other people think?
are you restoring the web cam, originally on the old site--thx
Agreed, we need a proper gallery on the new site so that evryone can contribute. I put the Flickr link up on the old site because I couldn't get the old Photobucket link to work and I wanted to, at least, see something fresh up there. I am meeting with the Ailsa Horizons people on 6th September in the hope that some or all of the issued being raised can be dealt with. We certainly need an up to date 'Activities' section. In the meantime I am happy to keep things moving on the Facebook page and to post any up to date photos on there or on the Flickr link. Please e-mail me on stuartjohngreen@gmx.co.uk if you want to submit photos, events or whatever until the new site can become fully operational. Stuart.
Agree with all comments so far. As for photos, the pic on the old home page was called Journey's End and was a super photo of the harbour. It came from the original GOL Gallery, but I can't remember who took it. This was replaced by the Photobucket Gallery ( girvan_online) which contains some good and interesting pics of Girvan and around. Ok, some not so good stuff as well. All we have at the moment is the Flickr link and I don't see why the Photobucket link (or a reincarnation of it) can't be there as well. That way, people could upload their photos. The current Flickr link is to a personal album, so only one person can use it.
All I can do is emulate some of the comments already left. The site does look fresh and better but business links/structure needs to be made much easier and more obvious, same with the photos on the site, there are many local photographers including myself that would be happy to submit some more images that do justice to the beauty of the area for those not local to see.
I have to agree with Gillian about the photos - given the amazing views from Girvan harbour, the pictures on the home page seem singularly uninspiring!
I think the business directory is terrible! it is extremely hard to find people. It is not organised and does not do local business any justice in the way this is layered out. The pictures on the home page do not do the town any justice either plenty picture avaliable that do not have cars cut in to the photo! A view from the harbour looking toward the town with stumpy in the background would have been more scenic for tourists that may checkout this website!!!
Great to see someone is listening to the comments!
