The Isle of Arran

Girvan lies within Ayrshire and as well as our fantastic town which we would love you to visit, Ayrshire also has many other attractions and has been described as captivating, lush, rugged and serene, quiet and bustling. The area boasts a wealth of history and heritage and is of course the home of Robert Burns and the Open Golf Championship. There's lots to do including sporting activities, arts and crafts, shopping and restaurants and bars. Culzean Castle and Country Park

 

A short journey from Girvan lies Culzean Castle and Country Park, often described as the 'jewel in the crown' for The National Trust of Scotland. Designed by Adam in 1777, it offers romance and culture in a stunning package, built on a cliff top and marvellously restored. Souter Johnnie's Cottage

 

A few miles from Girvan lies the village of Kirkoswald which has many associations with the poet Robert Burns. The most famous of these is Souter Johnnie's Cottage, cared for by The National Trust of Scotland. Souter Johnnie was a central character in the famous Burns poem Tam O' Shanter. The character was based on Kirkoswald man John Davidson who was a shoemaker or souter and he lived and worked in this cottage, where Burns visited, until his death in 1806. Lendalfoot - home of Sawney Bean

 

Five miles south of Girvan you will find Lendalfoot. The shoreline of Lendalfoot today boasts picnic areas, caravan sites, holiday homes and cottages but 600 years ago, legend has it that it was home to Sawney Bean the cannibal and his family. Today you can follow the pathway that leads to his cave and explore it for yourself and afterwards - if you still have the stomach for it - enjoy a picnic of a more tasteful kind on the beach! Brunston Castle Golf Club

 

Brunston Castle Golf Club is a championship golf course designed by one of Scotland’s leading course architects, Donald Steel. The course is not far from Girvan in an area of outstanding beauty. The Electric Brae

 

The Electric Brae is located on the coastal road from Girvan to Ayr, just 1m south of Dunure. Also sometimes known as Croy Brae, it is a well known scenic stretch of road where the configuration of the land gives the impression that a vehicle can freewheel uphill. How does it work? Well the land on either side of the road creates an optical illusion so it looks as if the slope is going the other way. There is a past belief that an electric or magnetic forcefield was the cause of this and some even believed that poltergeists were at work !!! Heads of Ayr Farm Park

 

A 30 minute drive along the scenic coast from Girvan to Ayr is the Heads of Ayr Farm Park where you can guarantee a fun packed family day out. Marvel at the animals including camels, wallabies, lemurs, monkeys, buffalo, prairie dogs, ponies, deer and much more. Have fun in the indoor and outdoor play areas, aerial runway, ringo sledging, quad bikes and trampolines. The only problem you are likely to have is finding the time to fit everything in! Glasgow is the closest city to Girvan and can be easily accessed by train, car or bus from Girvan. Victorian architecture meets 21st century in a hip city where the natives are famous for enjoying life. Scotland's largest city is split into distinct villages, each with it's own architectural style including the bohemian West End, the cool Merchant city and the warm hearted east end.
