Dailly (Wednesday 5 March 2008 12:20)
Dailly are soon to be joining us on Girvan Online and this thread is specifically for you. Do you live in Dailly? Or do you have special memories of the village and times spent there. What do you like about it? What do you not like about it? Why not pop on and say hello?

I was born at Kilgrammie (the suburbs of Dailly) and moved to the village when I was about 1 year old (not that I remember the move). I spent my younger days there till I was 13 and moved along the road to the big city (Girvan). It was a great place to live, so much to do. This of course was when kids made there own fun and there were only 2 channels on telly (didn't have a telly till I was about 10 anyway). I loved living in Dailly and it was quite a shock moving into the BIG town. Fond memories.

What do the good folks of Dailly do for a living these days? Other than the old bit, Dailly is mostly, dare I say it, a Scheme. Were these houses built for the mine workers, or just for the expanding local population? If I remember, there used to be 3 working coal mines in Dailly, the Maxwell, the Dalquharran and another. There also used to be ani open pit mine up on the hills to the west. They used to be called the Burning Hills, I think because they were on fire deep down in the seams. A lot of the miners lived in Girvan and they were entitled to free coal. Trouble was that it came in a 5 ton lorry and was tipped on to the street just outside the miner's house. A lot of shovelling then followed.

When I was wee (and some say I still am), I used to know Scobies, Skillans, Doyles, Camerons and Burn's who lived in Dailly. Some of their offspring are probably still there.

When I was the same wee, I used to ride around from time to time in a lorry (wartime Bedford it was) owned by a man from Old Dailly. His base was right opposite the church where the Barr road comes down. He hauled anything, but also delivered coal, but I cannot remember his name. I think he had a yard at the north end of New Dailly as well.

I went to Carrick Academy and the Dailly peeps used to get bussed there instead of Girvan Academy. Is this still the case?

Aw bless! I am quite safe will be going hame soon, tuesday I think maybe wednesday.

Meanwhile enjoying those long, luxuriant walks on the shore with ma n my sister's collie. Been hopping in and out of the water, around the rock pools and picking up shells (not WW2 ones) and enjoying the fresh air. So it's all good! :0)

Aww Doug wouldnt want you blow sky high..... I also love washed up wood, you know the type you can make things from, being arty-farty myself! Decorated mirros with driftwood and shells, lovely for a bathroom with a sea theme.

OK I am nuts.

Washed up driftwood.

I was in South Uist last month and on the west coast sandy beaches there was a huge amount of polished smooth driftwood. Maybe you should pay a visit.

Would this collie of your sister be a Border Collie?

Yes tis a border collie......she is lovely. I often take her walkies along the beach opposite the golf course and Ailsa Craig. Like the sound of that driftwood, sound ripe for sculpting!

I would love to have a go at sculptures in wood.......I like the natural flow of wood and the grain especially with the colours of washed up wood.
